◆日の試練もまた恵み◆

それゆえ私たちは､この苦しみのゆえに神を賛美する。この魂のふさぎ込みのゆえに神に感謝する。この財産の損失のゆえにみ名を褒めたたえる。そのようなことが起こらなかったならば、すなわち神が来る朝ごとに私たちを懲らしめ、来るゆうべごとに私たちを悩まさなかったならば、我々はあまりに安寧をむさぼることになるからだ。この世的な繁栄の中にあり続けることは、火のような試練である。諸君の中のいずれかがそうであるなら、あなた自身の状況に対して、この箴言を適用してみるとよかろう。

（箴言 27:21） 「るつぼは銀のため、炉は金のためにあるように、他人の称賛によって人はためされる。」

We bless God, then, for our afflictions; we thank him for our depressions of spirit; we extol his name for the losses of our property; for we feel that had it not so happened to us, had he not chastened us every morning and vexed us every evening, we might have become too secure. Continued worldly prosperity is a fiery trial. If it be so with any of you, apply this proverb to your own state, “As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold: so is a man to his praise.”
