◆イースターを信じてますか？◆

 

その女性の名前はエディス・バーンズといいました。テキサス州サンアントニオに住むすてきなクリスチャン女性でした。彼女はウィル・フィリップスという名の腕の立つクリスチャンドクターの患者でした。この優しいドクターは、患者を“人間”として扱いました。彼のお気に入りの患者はこのエディス・バーンズでした。

 

 

 

ある朝、彼は重い心を抱いて診療所に向かいましたが、その原因はこのエディス・バーンズの検査結果のことでした。彼が待合室に入ると、そこにはエディスが待っていて、膝の上には大きな黒表紙の聖書を置いていました。彼女は隣に座っている若い母親に熱心に話しかけていました。ドクター・フィリップスには、エディスがそこにいる理由も、彼女が何をしているかも分かっていました。実はエディス・バーンズには､このように自己紹介する習慣があったのです。「こんにちは。私の名はエディス・バーンズよ。あなた、イースターを信じてます？」　それから彼女は、おもむろにイースターの説明を始め、多くの人が救われたのです。

 

 

 

ドクター・フィリップスは看護師に言いました。「ベヴァリー、まだエディスを診療室に呼ばないでくれないか。待合室には彼女が話したい人が他にもきっといるから。」

 

 

 

診療室に呼ばれると、エディスは椅子に腰かけ、ドクターの顔を一目見て、言いました。「ウィル先生、なんでそんな悲しそうな顔なさってるの？　聖書読んでます？　ちゃんと祈ってます？」

 

 

 

ドクター・フィリップスは言いました。「ねえエディス、私が医者であなたは患者なんだよ。」重い心で彼は続けました。「君の検査室の結果が返ってきたんだが、がんが見つかった。そしてエディス、君はもうそんなに長くはないんだ。」

 

 

 

エディスは言いました。「まあ、ウィル・フィリップス、恥ずかしくないの？　なんでそんなに悲しがるの？　神様が診断を間違えたとでも言う気？　あなたはたった今、こう言ったのよ、『あなたは間もなく主イエス様に、ご主人に、そして友人たちに会えるよ』って。そうよ、こう言ったの、『あなたはイースターを永遠にお祝いするようになるんだ。』　なのに、その天国行きチケットを渡すのを渋ってるわけ？」

 

 

 

ドクター・フィリップスは心の中で考えました。”エディス・バーンズって人は、なんてすごい女性なんだ！”と。

 

 

 

それからもエディスは、ドクター・フィリップスのもとに毎日通いました。クリスマスがやってきて、診療所は新年３日まで休診になりました。診療が再開された日、エディスは姿を見せませんでした。その日の午後遅く、エディスはドクター・フィリップスに電話をして、彼女の住まいを病院に移さなければいけないようだと告げました。そして、こう続けました。「ウィル、私、真剣なのよ。だから私のベッドの隣には、イースターについて知る必要のある女性を送ってほしいの。」

 

 

 

それで、言われたように、そのような女性たちがやってきて、彼女と同室になりました。多くの女性がそれは見事に救われました。その階にいる者たちは、スタッフから患者に至るまで、誰もがエディスのことで心を躍らせるあまり、彼女を”エディス・イースター“と呼ぶほどでした。誰もが、そう、看護師長のフィリス・クロスを除いては――。彼女は、「エディスは”宗教オタク”だから、彼女と関わる気は毛頭ないわ」と公言していました。

 

 

 

フィリスは､以前、陸軍病院で看護師をしていました。彼女は、軍の病院がどういうものか、身をもって知り抜いていました。彼女は生え抜きの“G.I.ジェイン”（男性の中で良い成果を上げるために、女性らしさを犠牲にして厳しく生きてきた女性－訳注）でした。それまでに３度結婚し、かたくなで、冷ややかで、全てを指示書どおりにやり遂げる人間でした。

 

 

 

さて、ある朝、エディス担当の２人の看護師が病気になり、フィリス・クロスが代わりに、インフルエンザの注射をしなければならなくなりました。入ってくると、エディスは彼女ににっこり笑って言いました。「フィリス、神様はあなたを愛してるわよ。私もあなたを愛してる。あなたのために祈ってるのよ。」

 

 

 

フィリス・クロスは言いました。「あら、私のために祈るのはやめてよ、”宗教オタク”さん、効きっこないんだから。興味ないわ。」エディスは答えました。「いえ、祈るわよ。神様に、あなたが私の”家族”になるまでは家に返さないでってもうお願いしたもの。」フィリスは言いました。「ではあなたは決して死なないわね。だって、そんなこと金輪際 起きないもの。」　彼女は部屋を出ていきました。

 

 

 

フィリス・クロスは毎日その部屋に入ってきて、そのたびにエディスは言うのでした。「フィリス、神様はあなたを愛してるわよ。私もあなたを愛してる。あなたのために祈ってるのよ。」　ある日、フィリス・クロスは､まるで磁石が鉄を引き付けるように、文字どおりエディスの部屋に引き寄せられてしまうと言いました。彼女がベッドの上に座ると、エディスは言いました。「来てくれて本当にうれしいわ。神様が、今日はあなたの特別の日になるとおっしゃったの。」

 

 

 

フィリス・クロスは言いました。「エディス、あなたはここに来る人みんなに『イースターを信じてる？』って聞いたけど、私には一度も聞いてくれなかったわ。」

 

 

 

エディスは言いました。「フィリス、何度もそうしたかったの。でも神様が、あなたからそれを聞いてくるまで待つようにって言われたの。そして今、聞いてくれたわ。」　彼女は聖書を手に取ると、フィリス・クロスに、イエス・キリストの死と、葬りと、よみがえりの“イースター物語”を話してあげました。

 

 

 

それから彼女は尋ねました。「フィリス、あなた、イースターを信じる？　イエス・キリストは生きていて、あなたの心の中に住みたいと望んでいらっしゃると信じる？」

 

 

 

フィリス・クロスは言いました。「ああ、心の底から信じたいわ。そしてイエス様に、私の人生の中に入ってほしい。」

 

 

 

その場で、フィリス・クロスは祈り、自分の心の中にイエス・キリストを迎え入れました。生まれて初めて、フィリス・クロスは病室から歩き去りませんでした。彼女は天使の翼に乗って運びされたのです。

 

 

 

２日後、フリス・クロスが入ってくると、エディスは聞きました。「今日はなんの日か知ってる？」

 

 

 

フィリス・クロスは答えました。「あらエディス、聖金曜日でしょ？」

 

 

 

エディスは言いました。「いいえ違うわ。あなたには、毎日がイースターよ。イースターおめでとう、フィリス！」

 

 

 

それから２日後、イースターの日曜日、フィリス・クロスは出勤で、仕事を済ませると、階下に降りて花屋さんのところに行き、イースターのユリの花を買いました。上の階のエディスにこの花をあげ、「イースターおめでとう」を言いたかったのです。エディスの部屋に入ると、彼女はベッドの中でした。

 

 

 

大きな黒表紙の聖書が、彼女の膝の上にありました。彼女の両手は聖書の上にあり、優しいほほ笑みが彼女の顔に浮かんでいました。フィリス・クロスがエディスの手を取ろうとした時、彼女はエディスが死んでいるのに気づきました。彼女の左の手はヨハネ１４章の上にありました。「わたしの父の家には、住まいがたくさんあります。もしなかったら、あなたがたに言っておいたでしょう。あなたがたのために、わたしは場所を備えに行くのです。わたしが行って、あなたがたに場所を備えたら、また来て、あなたがたをわたしのもとに迎えます。わたしのいる所に、あなたがたをもおらせるためです。」（２，３節:訳注）

 

 

 

彼女の右の手は、黙示録２１:４の上にありました。「彼らの目の涙をすっかりぬぐい取ってくださる。もはや死もなく、悲しみ、叫び、苦しみもない。なぜなら、以前のものが、もはや過ぎ去ったからである。」

 

 

 

フィリス・クロスはエディスの体から離れ、病室から出ると、２人の看護師実習中の女学生が座っているテーブルに歩み寄りました。彼女は言いました。「私の名前はフィリス・クロスよ。あなたたち、イースターを信じてる？」

"Do you believe in Easter?"

The Lady's name was Edith Burns. She was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas. She was the patient of a fine Christian doctor by the name of Will Phillips, a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.

 

One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns. When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap. She was earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her. Dr. Phillips knew why Edith was there and what she was doing. You see, Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.

 

Dr. Phillips said to the nurse, "Beverly, don't call Edith into the office quite yet. I believe there is another delivery taking place in the waiting room.

 

After being called back in the doctor's office, Edith sat down and when she took a look at the doctor she said, "Dr. Will, why are you so sad? Are you reading your Bible? Are you praying?"

 

Dr. Phillips said, "Now Edith, I'm the doctor and you're the patient." With a heavy heart he said, "your lab report came back and it says you have cancer, and Edith, you're not going to live very long."

 

Edith said, "Why Will Phillips, shame on you. Why are you so sad? Do you think God makes mistakes? You have just told me I'm going to see my precious Lord Jesus, my husband, and my friends. You have just told me that I am going to celebrate Easter forever, and here you are having difficulty giving me my ticket!"

 

Dr. Phillips thought to himself, "What a magnificent woman this Edith Burns is!"

 

Edith continued coming to Dr. Phillips every day. Christmas came and the office was closed through January 3rd. On the day the office opened, Edith did not show up. Later that afternoon, Edith called Dr. Phillips and said she would have to be moving her story to the hospital and said, "Will, I'm very near home, so would you make sure that they put women in here next to me in my room who need to know about Easter.

 

Well, they did just that and women began to come in and share that room with Edith. Many women were gloriously saved. Everybody on that floor from staff to patients were so excited about Edith, that they started calling her Edith Easter; everyone except Phyllis Cross, the head nurse. She made it plain that she wanted nothing to do with Edith because she was a "religious nut."

 

She had been a nurse in an army hospital. She had seen it all and heard it all. She was the original G.I. Jane. She had been married three times, and she was hard, cold, and did everything by the book. Well, one morning the two nurses who were to attend to Edith were sick, and Phyllis Cross had to go in and give her a flu shot. When she walked in, Edith had a big smile on her face and said, "Phyllis, God loves you and I love you, and I have been praying for you."

 

Phyllis Cross said, "Well, you can quit praying for me, you religious nut, it won't work. I'm not interested." Edith said, "Well, I will pray and I have asked God not to let me go home until you come into the family." Phyllis Cross said, "Then you will never die because that will never happen." She walked out of the room.

 

Every day Phyllis Cross would walk into that room and Edith would say, "God loves you Phyllis and I love you, and I'm praying for you." One day Phyllis Cross said she was literally drawn to Edith's room like a magnet would draw iron. She sat down on the bed and Edith said, "I'm so glad you have come, because God told me that today is your special day."

 

Phyllis Cross said, "Edith, you have asked everybody here the question, 'Do you believe in Easter?' but you have never asked me."

 

Edith said, "Phyllis, I wanted to many times, but God told me to wait until you asked, and now that you have asked..." She took her Bible and shared with Phyllis Cross the Easter Story of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

 

Then she asked, "Phyllis, do you believe in Easter? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is alive and that He wants to live in your heart?"

 

Phyllis Cross said, "Oh I want to believe that with all of my heart, and I do want Jesus in my life."

 

Right there, Phyllis Cross prayed and invited Jesus Christ into her heart. For the first time Phyllis Cross did not walk out of a hospital room, she was carried out on the wings of angels.

 

Two days later, Phyllis Cross came in and Edith said, "Do you know what day it is?"

 

Phyllis Cross said, "Why Edith, it's Good Friday."

 

Edith said, "Oh, no, for you every day is Easter. Happy Easter Phyllis!"

 

Well, two days later, on Easter Sunday, Phyllis Cross came into work, did some of her duties and then went down to the flower shop and got some Easter lilies because she wanted to go up to see Edith and give her those Easter lilies and wish her a Happy Easter. When she walked into Edith's room, Edith was in bed.

 

That big black Bible was on her lap. Her hands were in that Bible and there was a sweet smile on her face. When Phyllis Cross went to pick up Edith's hand, she realized Edith was dead. Her left hand was on John 14: "In my Father's house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also."

 

Her right hand was on Revelation 21:4, "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

 

Phyllis Cross took one look at that dead body, and then lifted her face toward heaven, and with tears streaming down here cheeks, said, "Happy Easter, Edith Burns - Happy Easter!"

 

Phyllis Cross left Edith's body, walked out of the room, and over to a table where two student nurses were sitting. She said, "My name is Phyllis Cross. Do you believe in Easter?
