◆リンカーンの収穫感謝祭宣言◆

1863年10月3日　エイブラハム・リンカーン大統領告示

 

以下のことは、人として、また国家としての義務である。すなわち、神の絶対的統治力に己を依存させること。へりくだった悲しみのうちに、その罪過を告白し、しかしなお、“心からの悔い改めは、あわれみと赦しに導く”という確かな希望を持つこと。そして、聖書において告知され、全歴史を通して証明された、“主を神とする国家は祝福される”という崇高なる真理を理解することである。

 

神の聖なる法則によって、個人同様、国家もまた、この世において、処罰と矯正の下にあることを我々は知っている。願わくは我々が、今やこの国土を荒廃に帰している恐ろしい内戦（訳注：　南北戦争1861-65）の厄災を、我々の傲岸な罪に対して降りかかった裁きとして恐れるだけでなく、全国民を挙げて国家を再興するという必要な目的に向かう者とならしめんことを。

 

　我々は、天の選び抜かれたたまものの享受者であり続けてきた。長年の間、平和の繁栄の中を守られてきた。他のいかなる国家も達しえなかった、数と、富と、力において成長し続けてきた。

 

　だが我々は、神を忘れてしまった。我々を平和のうちに保ち、増やし、豊かにし、強めてくださった慈愛のみ手を忘却してしまった。そして、自らの心を欺きつつ、これらの祝福の全ては、ある超越した知恵と、我々自身の徳によって生み出されたのだと、いたずらに想像してしまった。打ち続く成功に酔いつつ、我々は、贖われ、守られるべき恵みの必要性を感じるには、あまりに自己満足に陥り、我々を創られた神に祈るには、あまりにも尊大になってしまったのだ。

 

　私には、全アメリカ国民によって、1つの心、1つの声で、神が、厳粛に、敬虔に、そして感謝を持って受け入れられるべき時として、今が最もふさわしいように思える。それゆえ私は、アメリカ合衆国のあらゆる地や、海上にあり、あるいは外国の地に寄留している我が愛する国民に対し、11月の最後の木曜日を、”収穫感謝の日”として、また天に住む慈愛深き父なる神を褒めたたえる日として、特別に守ることを要請する者である。

【解説】　日本の「勤労感謝の日」の基となっている「収穫感謝の日」は、このように、南北戦争の熾烈な戦いと荒廃の中で、合衆国大統領令によって定められたのです。でも敬虔なキリスト者として、聖書を座右の銘としたリンカーンによって起草されたこの宣言文は、150年を経た今日においても、その格調の高さと、メッセージの重要性において、今も生き生きと光彩を放っています。これが、日本国首相の名において発布されたら、どれほどすばらしいことかと願うのは、私だけでしょうか。“主を神とする国家は祝福される”、警告的に言い換えるなら、”神を恐れない国家は滅びる”。――このことを深く心に覚えて、為政者のために祈る者となりましょう。

 

Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation"

 

~ President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863 ~

 "It is the duty of nations as well as men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God: to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord.

"We know that by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world. May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people?

"We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown.

"But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.

"It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."
