◆水増し説教を語るなかれ◆

ああ、私は正真の科学や本格的教育は大いに愛するが、我らが牧師たちが、それらに”迎合”するのには痛く嘆き悲しんでいる。すなわち、会堂を埋め尽くした大学生たちや神学部の教授たちに最適な、”知的”説教者であらんとして、“模範的”な説教を語り、神の言葉を哲学で薄めてしまっているのだが、それらは、単純さ、温かさ、熱心さ、あるいはしっかりとした福音的内実にさえ欠けており、聖餐式や礼拝には役に立たないものなのだ。

Ah! much as I love true science and real education, I mourn and grieve that our ministers are so much diluting the Word of God with philosophy, desiring to be intellectual preachers, delivering model sermons, well fitted for a room full of college students and professors of theology, but of no use to the masses, being destitute of simplicity, warmth, earnestness, or even solid gospel matter.
