◆私の福音理解◆

昨今では“カルヴァン主義”と呼ばれるものを宣べ伝えずして、十字架につけられたキリストの宣教はあり得ないというのが私の個人的見解である。私には自分自身の考えがあり、それをいつでも大胆に述べている。それを“カルヴァン主義”と呼ぶのは、あだ名である。カルヴァン主義は”福音”であって、それ以外の何ものでもない。もし私たちが、業によらない信仰による義認を、あるいは恵みの付与における神の卓越性を宣べ伝えずして、あるいは選びや、不変にして永遠、全てに打ち克つ神の愛を褒めたたえずして、福音を宣べ伝えることができるとは信じない。はたまた私たちが、福音の基礎を、ご自身が選ばれた人々のためになされたキリストの特別の贖いに置かない限り、福音の宣教が可能だとは信じない。そしてまた、聖徒たちが召されたのちに再び堕落したり、神の子たちが信じたのちに永遠の断罪の炎に苦しむことを教える福音など、理解することはできない。かかる福音は、私の忌み嫌うものである。聖書の福音は、そのようなものではないのだ。私たちは、十字架につけられたキリストを、別のやり方で宣べ伝える。そして全ての反対者に対しては、こう答えよう。「我々は、キリストを、そのようには学ばなかった」と――。（訳注：　エペソ4：20）

I have my own private opinion that there is no such a thing as preaching Christ and him crucified, unless you preach what now-a-days is called Calvinism. I have my own ideas, and those I always state boldly. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith, without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in his dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering, love of Jehovah; nor do I think we can preach the gospel, unless we base it upon the peculiar redemption which Christ made for his elect and chosen people; nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called, and suffers the children of God to be burned in the fires of damnation after having believed. Such a gospel I abhor. The gospel of the Bible is not such a gospel as that. We preach Christ and him crucified in a different fashion, and to all gainsayers we reply, “We have not so learned Christ.”
