啓示された聖書の正典は完結していて、もう付け加える余地はない。神は、新たな啓示はお与えにならないが、古き啓示に、私たちの目を釘付けになさる。それが忘れられてしまい、私たちのほこりまみれの記憶の小部屋に埋もれているときには、神はそれを引き出して、描かれた絵をきれいになさる。しかし、新しい絵を描かれることはない。新しい教義はないが、古き教義は、しばしば“よみがえらされる”のだ。

The canon of revelation is closed; there is no more to be added. God does not give a fresh revelation, but he rivets the old one. When it has been forgotten, and laid in the dusty chamber of our memory, he fetches it out and cleans the picture, but does not paint a new one. There are no new doctrines, but the old ones are often revived."
