【解説】　ジョナサン・エドワーズは、18世紀アメリカの会衆派の牧師、カルヴァン主義神学者、アメリカ先住民への宣教師で、大覚醒運動（リバイバル）の指導者でもありました。この短い一節を読むと、文学的表現もなかなかのもので、地上のあらゆる楽しみよりも（それら自体は、神様からの恵みですが）、それらをお与えくださった創造者なる神様を楽しむべきことを、4つの例えによって読者に勧めています。ここで「天に上り」と言っているのは、必ずしも死後に約束されている天国でのことではありません。それは、この地上において、“心を天に向けて開く”ことによって可能です。地上の恵みの一つ一つを、“神に在って”楽しむとき、私たちは、心の深いところにおいて、“神ご自身”を楽しむことができるのです。
